Drought Situation analysis and Outlook for Winter 2009 Extreme western parts of Balochistan comprising Nokkundi, Panjgur and coastal areas did not receive any appreciable amount of rain since June 2008. Analysis of data at the end of Monsoon season 2008, depicts that meteorological drought prevailed over extreme western parts of Balochistan whereas drought like conditions emerged in southeast Sindh. Dry conditions continued to prevail during September-November 2008 over most of southern half of country. Moreover no rainfall was recorded in extreme western parts of Balochistan. Keeping in view the prevailing regional and global weather conditions, and projections of regional and global climate model, Southeastern parts of country specially the southeast Punjab and eastern Sindh are likely to remain mainly dry and drought conditions may intensify to moderate conditions in these areas by the end of January 2009. |

Near-neutral conditions of air-ocean interactions currently prevail in the tropical Pacific. Global climate models predict similar (near neutral) conditions to prevail till April, 2009. Keeping in view the SST conditions in the Pacific and other global circulation patterns like PDO, NAO etc. It depicts that eastern Sindh and coastal areas of country may remain practically dry and drought conditions would intensify in Eastern parts of Sindh and adjoining Punjab during next few months. |
