     Drought Advisory: UPDATE

Scattered Winter Rain on 28th & 29th Predicted:     MET OFFICE

Expected to help in alleviating the drought conditions.

First Winter Rain in upper parts of the country is expected on 28th & 29th January, 2010 after about 4-month of dry period.

A westerly weather system is expected to approach Balochistan on 27th and after giving some scattered  rainfall in Balochistan it would extend to other upper parts of the country including upper parts of Punjab and Islamabad.

Kashmir and Northern areas are also expected to receive rainfall/ snowfall during the above mentioned period.

These rains are expected, to some extent, help in alleviating the emerging drought  conditions and in improving the dense fog conditions in Punjab.

As far as the El-Nino phenomena, in Pacific Ocean, suppressing our rainfall is concerned, it after reaching a peak is now expected to decrease gradually and neutralize sometime in early summer.

The winter rains in the country, as predicated earlier, are expected to remain about 30% below normal. Judicious use of available water resources is emphasized.

Islamabad, 29th January, 2010

Scattered Winter Rains recorded in upper half of country     MET OFFICE

Good rainfall was recorded in northern parts of country after about 4-months of dry period.

The westerly weather system approached Balochistan on 27th and after giving scattered rainfall in Balochistan, it extended to other upper parts of the country including NWFP, upper parts of Punjab, Islamabad and Kashmir and yielded moderate to heavy rainfall in the areas.

These rains would help in alleviating the drought conditions and support standing crops especially in Barani areas

Good rainfall has been recorded over catchment areas http://www.pakmet.com.pk/FFD/index_files/rainfall.htm and it would contribute in improving water situation in reservoirs.

   Dated: 2nd February, 2010

· More Rain Predicted in the Country during 5th to 8th February:

· Coming rains would help in alleviating drought conditions in the country

Many parts of the country are expected to receive good winter rains and snowfall (over the mountains) during 5th to 8th February, 2010. This weather system would help in alleviating the emerging drought conditions in the country.

A westerly weather system is expected to approach Balochistan from the late evening of 4th February and after giving some scattered rainfall in Balochistan it would extend to other parts of the country including Punjab and Islamabad, NWFP, Northern Areas, Kashmir and parts of Sindh.

Kashmir and Northern Areas are expected to receive at times heavy rainfall/snowfall during the above mentioned period.

Winter rainfall during February is likely to remain better than that of previous months. The above predicted rains would be very useful for Rabi crops and help in recharging water resources.

12th January, 2010

No appreciable rainfall likely in catchment areas of reservoirs for next 10 days   Met Office

According to the prevailing meteorological conditions, the cold and dry weather conditions are likely to continue and significantly below normal winter rains are predicted during the month of January and February in most parts of the country. Major rainfall deficit may occur over the agricultural plains comprising the country food bowl.

No appreciable rainfall likely to occur over catchment areas of Simly, Khanpur & Rawal Dams during next ten days. Keeping in view the water situation in various dams (http://www.pakmet.com.pk/drought/index_files/Page339.htm), Water Management Authorities are requested to use available water judiciously.
